Metal Detecting At Meadowbrook Camping

May 6, 2020 by jdorrme Leave a Comment

As you may or may not know the history of Meadowbrook Camping area, in Phippsburg, Maine, I have traced the house back to 1794. The house is very old and this was a farm in the last century.

Well on May 5th, 2020 i was metal detecting out back of property by the pond, I found an old dump area where the residents of the oust use to dispose of their trash. This was a very common practice back in the day.  Their is a lot of old rusted cans, but one of the objects i found was a 12 oz bottle with a metal cap. The bottle was from the W. F. Young Inc. I did some research of the company and found out that the company was started in 1892, and is still in operation. This was a horse liniment. The bottle was in great shape and their is a phone number on website which i will call today to see if i can get more info on bottle.

I called the company this morning and talked to Shawn Black who knows the history of the company. He told me that this bottle was used between 1930 to 1965 and was used as a liniment for people. It cost between 5 and 10 dollars a bottle. I think this must be one of thee older bottles because this farm was vacant between the years of the late forties and 1969 when Jay Darling bought this farm and turned it into Meadowbrook Camping.
