Cape May Lighthouse

September 17, 2022 by jdorrme Leave a Comment

I have been to Cape May Lighthouse a couple of times but have never added it to my list of Lighthouses I have visited. Today is the day. The first people to settle in this area where from New England whalers in the 1600’s. The first known lighthouse was built in 1823, but the lighthouse was taken by the sea. A second lighthouse was built in 1847 about one-third of a mile from the current location, but due to poor construction and erosion was never put into service. The current lighthouse was built in 1859 and is 157 feet tall and is still active today. It is visible up to 24 miles out to sea. And flashes every 15 seconds. You can climb the 199 steps to the top for a fee.

This would be a great family trip and a day the kids would remember for a long time.
