PHIPPSBURG- Russell Alexander, 82, of Sebasco Road, died September 13, 2016 at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick. Russell was born on January 16, 1934 to minister and fisherman Henry and Estella (McKenney) Alexander of Phippsburg.
Russell began working at the age of 13 as a deck hand, and on a local farm before becoming a burner mechanic at Gibbons Oil Company. In 1958, he joined Bath Police Department, retiring as Corporal in 1984. Russell soon returned to law enforcement by serving on Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Department first as Chief Deputy and later as Sheriff. He would later become the Chief of Police in Phippsburg before hanging up his badge for the final time in 2000. Russell then spent his days working at the Phippsburg Transfer Station until fall, 2013, doing what he loved most, enjoying people.
Russell married Barbara Curran on July 11, 1953 and together they had three daughters. Russell is survived by Barbara of Phippsburg; three daughters, Donna Keller and partner, Dave Ouellette of Brunswick; Doreen Gilliam and husband Henry of Phippsburg; and Deletra Wells and husband Jason of Palermo. Russell is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Russell was also blessed with many siblings, predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters while survived by a brother Lendall Alexander and wife Sherry of Bath; a brother Henry Jr., and wife Natalie of Phippsburg, a brother Duane Alexander and wife Dawn of Palermo; and a sister Ruthie and her husband Dr. Peter Doan of Bristol, New Hampshire,sisters-in-law; Naomi Alexander, Sally Alexander, Priscilla Durrell, Mary Cousins and many nieces and nephews.
