Millinocket Donald A. “Benny” Benson, 78, of Millinocket, Maine, passed away peacefully on Dec. 13, 2018, at a Bangor hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Oct. 17, 1940, the son of Donald H. Benson and Anna (Smith) Benson.
He graduated from Northbridge High School in Whitinsville, MA, in 1959. Following graduation, he served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1959 to 1968, and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He also served in the MEARNG 314th Medical Company and retired as First Sergeant in 1995. Benny served his local community as well, working 18 years with the Millinocket Police Department, retiring as detective.
On April 17, 1976, he married the love of his life, his soulmate, Jeannine Herring. Benny was the 2nd Vice Commander of the American Legion Post 80 in Millinocket, a member of the Fin and Feather Club, Silent SideKicks, and several other organizations. He was a proud, but humble veteran, an avid outdoorsman, a family man, loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jeannine; daughter, Wanda Dami of Whitefield, NH; and sons, Thomas of Tucson, AZ, Donnie of Connelly Springs, NC, John and wife, Melissa, of Millinocket, and Travis of Millinocket. He also leaves behind his in-laws, Tom Herring and wife, Sue, Fred Herring and wife, Yvette, Jamie Herring and wife, Tally, and Judy Nicholson and husband, Scott. He was known as “Grampy” to 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, and “Uncle Benny” to several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many cousins and friends, who will sincerely miss him and his incredible gift of storytelling.
There will be a celebration of life at the American Legion Post 80, 970 Central St., Millinocket, on Saturday, December 29, 2018, from 1-5 p.m. Interment with full military honors will take place at a later date.
